Thursday May 27, Laree Gardener stayed at home waiting for a call that would tell her if she would spend her summer half-way around the world or not. The phone rang, and once she picked it up she discovered that she had not received the award. She was the runner up.

Athletes are held to a higher standard than our president – our class president, that is. This is all because of the athletic code of conduct. The Michigan High School Athletic Association requires all participants in athletic activities for their high school to sign an athletic code of conduct. The athletic code of conduct includes attendance procedures, identifies behavior expectations and disciplinary consequences for all high school student athletes. It says that any student who makes the decision to act in an unacceptable manner is disciplined by the school system as set forth in this code of conduct and is offered rehabilitation as indicated.

Students place second in astronomy competition in San Jose

A nice chunk of cash, $500 per person to be exact and an asteroid named in their honor. For senior Laree Gardner and junior Stephen Morrison, as well as South High School senior Genevieve Wang, these are the perks that come with receiving second place at the International Science and Engineering Fair in San Jose, California in the astronomy team’s category.

Change in senior exams juggles schedule

During senior exams, while seniors were anticipating the end of their four year journey, the rest of the school was looking forward to those lazy half days we are accustomed to while seniors are testing. But unfortunately for juniors, sophomores and freshmen, a shortage in minutes required us to come in on those days to make up the time we’ve lost.

Teachers agree on a contract at last

Ask almost any teacher how this year has been and the answer will most likely be “stressful.” After working for months without a contract, the teachers officially ratified an agreement with the School Board on Monday, by a 395-23 vote.

Students pay to skip class and ‘jailbreak’ for a cause

Ten dollars gets you 49 minutes. 49 minutes free from a boring lecture or class notes. Students who choose to participate are getting out of class to go to the Jailbreak fundraiser. All the proceeds will go to the Jacob Michael Davis Foundation.

Local radio celebrity Lisa Jesswein stood at the front of the Student Union, holding a large silver platter of oven-fresh cookies. She smiled contentedly at her eager audience, the Be the Change tutorial, while the smell of melting chocolate and soft cookie dough wafted through the room.
